Jeju-style products for home meal replacement drawing keen attention

JNU HMR Project Team records 340 million sales in six months
Recently, South Korea’s consumers have shown an increasing attention in Jeju-style meal kits, also known as Home Meal Replacement (HMR) products.
Jeju National University announced Monday (Aug. 23) that the HMR products developed by the university using Jeju-grown agricultural ingredients have made a good sales record in the domestic market.
Assigned by the Rural Development Administration, the university’s researchers have recently developed new HMR products, including the Jeju Buckwheat Noodle Kit and the Jeju Traditional Porridge Kit.
The products were launched six months ago on the nation’s popular e-commerce platforms, such as Kakao Makers and Market Kurley. The accumulated sales have reached 340 million won so far, with the developers now planning to enter overseas markets in the United States and Southeast Asia.
The university’s research team is currently testing the individual quick freezing technology. New products developed using the technology will be out for test marketing within this year.
An official from the university’s HMR development team, said that the project will not only increase the sales of food processing companies but also the income of local farmers. The development of HMR products using winter vegetables will have to be expanded, he added.
The specialist expected that the nation’s HMR product market will rapidly grow to be worth 5 trillion won by 2022, which requires a strategic measure to foster the Jeju-type HMR industry at the local government level.
