University museum starts photo exhibition on Seogwipo

Jeju National University Museum is hosting a photo exhibition, titled, “Embracing Seogwipo”, the university announced on Monday (Sept. 6).

The event displays the photographs by late Kang Byung-soo, who used to express his love of Seogwipo and donated his works to the school museum.

In honor of the photographer’s love and dedication to the local community, the museum decided to exhibit the artist’s 40 photos about Seogwipo people in the 1960s to 1970s, as well as some 20 cameras he used to use.

The black and white photos contain the images of Seogwipo community members who participated in road construction, land reclamation, and field work that took place in the 1960s. The exhibit also disclosed some of the rarest photographs that help the viewers appreciate the lifestyle of the people in the 1960s.

Kang Byung-soo (1946-2019) started taking photographs at the age of 15 and distributed Leica Camera products for more than 50 years. Working with Leica cameras, the artist took photos of different events that happened in government offices, schools, and small neighborhoods in the 1960s and the 1970s.

Later, he donated many of his photos to Jeju National University Museum and other domestic institutes, which have since provided valuable materials for the study of Seogwipo’s culture, history, nature, and folklore.

After Kang passed away in 1999, Kang’s family donated more than 100 cameras he collected through his life. The exhibition is also offered in the video format on the website of the university museum (https://museum.jejunu.ac.kr).
