Jeju National University’s Research Institute for Basic Science held the entrance ceremony for its Jeju Citizen into Science (CIS) Course, the institute announced on Friday (Sept. 3).

Dubbed “The Citizens’ College”, the Jeju CIS Course is the first non-degree science education program held in Jeju Province.

The course is aimed at inviting both researchers and ordinary citizens to develop, plan, and implement research projects on Jeju Island’s natural phenomena.

The entrance ceremony featured a special lecture on the Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin, presented by Choi Jae-cheon, a Ewha Women’s University professor, and the following discussion meeting and a membership-building activity for new students.

The “citizen” and professional scientists also shared their opinions on the proposed research topics, research methods, and other necessary tasks.

The Jeju CIS Course will be run every Friday with invited lectures and research activities, which will continue for 15 weeks until December.

Paeng Dong-guk, the dean of the Jeju CIS Course (a professor in the Department of Ocean System Engineering), said the program will help make the scholarship of basic sciences be more appealing and interesting to the public.
