Anesthesiology professor translates best-known pharmacokinetics book

Park Jongcook, professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Jeju National University School of Medicine, recently published his translation of “Pharmacokinetics for the Pharmaceutical Scientist”, authored by John G. Wagner, a former pharmacology professor at the University of Michigan.
After retiring, Wagner put all his experiences and medical data into publishing the book, which has been known to be the most influential book in the pharmacokinetics field over the past three decades.
Pharmacokinetics is defined as the study of the time course of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. It mainly studies how the metabolic changes of the substance in the body, that is, how the body reacts to the physiological/physiochemical substance after administration. In this sense, pharmacokinetics is essential in finding solutions to the issues involving efficacy and substance abuse.
Park’s translation describes pharmacokinetics in 17 chapters, which are organically interconnected. The book introduces abundant statistical data obtained through the clinical tests about pharmacological actions, as well as a range of mathematical expressions and models related to pharmacology.
The nation’s health practitioners had had little access to technical books in the study of pharmacokinetics for reference until Park’s translation of “Pharmacokinetics for the Pharmaceutical Scientist” was released. Park explains that the book has great potential as a research material based on different mathematics models, concerning a more systematic and standardized drug use in Korea.
According to the translator, the book is for professionals and practitioners in the field of pharmacology, mostly covering difficult formula and mathematical models for the public to understand. People with professional knowledge or working in the related fields will find it very useful, he expected.
