Research project on commons and sustainability to receive NRF funds

Jeju National University’s Research Center on the Commons and Sustainable Society has been selected to receive funds for institutes on humanities and social studies provided by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF).
The state-funding program aims to create specialized research centers and foster researchers in the field of humanities studies.
The Research Center on the Commons and Sustainable Society was recognized by the NRF for its research on utilizing the commons for balanced regional growth and the autonomy of civil society.
In 2011, the research center joined the NRF’s Sociology of Scientific Knowledge (SSK) program, leading the studies of the commons in Korea, such as the farms, fisheries, forests, and groundwater, over the past 10 years.
Research compilations published by the center also earned recognition by winning the excellent book awards presented by the Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea and the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea.
With the NRF’s latest selection, the center will be an exceptional local research institute in the humanities studies and social sciences to receive funds for the next six years. The yearly funding will amount to 260 million won, totaling 1 billion 650 million won until 2027.
During the new project term, the center plans to conduct research on the commons that are available for the endogenous development of the Jeju region.
