Ocean Leisure Sports Center to hold online traditional games championships

The 2nd Online Traditional Gaming Championships series will held for the faculty and students, the Jeju National University’s Ocean Leisure Sports Center announced Thursday (Sept. 16).

From Sept. 20 to 30, the JNU institute will determine the champion of Gonggi Nori, a traditional Korean jacks game.

The championships will run in the individual and the group tournaments, where the contenders are supposed to send to the organizers (tradition109@naver.com) the recorded video clips of them playing the game following the set rule.

The sports center will select five people or teams that obtained the highest scores within the limited time, giving them prizes.

The championships will continue to be held until the end of September, with the winners to be announced on the center’s website after Oct. 4.

The JNU Ocean Leisure Sports Center has made efforts to raise public awareness of and draw attention to traditional Korean games since 2019, when the National Research Foundation started funding its six-year research project on sports education programs using traditional games.

Alongside hosting the championships, the center will also develop education programs and seminars as well as teaching materials to establish the rules of traditional Korean games and increase public interest in the significance of the nation’s traditional culture.
