Prof. Jung was elected as the first female elected chairperson with 81.88% of the vote.
Professor Jung Su-yeon (54, JNU Department of Economics) was elected in the election of the 12th Chairmperson of the JNU Professors' Council. She is the first female chairperson since its establishment. Prof. Jung ran alone in the election on January 11 and was elected with 81.88% of the vote.
The chairperson of JNU Professors' Council will chair the board of trustees of the university that deliberates and decides on important university management matters, including the university's budget and settlement deliberation.
In this election, 458 voters cast ballots, showing a turnout of 79.79 percent. Prof. Jeong was elected with 375 votes (81.88 percent) out of 458 valid votes. Her term will run for two years from Mar. 1, 2025.
Chairperson Jeong earned a doctorate in economics from Chung-Ang University. She served as the president of the National Federation of Women Professors of National and Public Universities, the president of the Jeju University Women Professors Council, and the head of the Jeju Real Estate Research Center.
In the academic activities, she has been the president of the Korean Appraisal Society and the secretary-general of the Asian Real Estate Society. In addition, she was active in the community as the head of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Public Price Verification Center and the chairman of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Housing Welfare Policy Advisory Committee.
In her victory speech, Prof. Jung Su-yeon emphasized, "The environment surrounding the universities is changing rapidly. Demographic cliff and local extinction mean a decrease in university admission resources. JNU Professors' Council will play a role in promoting and driving JNU response system. In addition, the council will try to strengthen communication and cooperation so that the board of trustees of the university, which acts as a practical parliament within JNU, operates fairly and properly for JNU development as a whole."
