JNU Jeju International Animal Research Center Secures KRW 7.5 billion from ‘Horizon Europe’ Project.

The JNU Jeju International Animal Research Center, led by Director Prof. Min Tae-sun, has developed natural pesticides utilizing Jeju specialties with support from the European Union (EU). This achievement highlights JNU's internationally recognized research capabilities and marks the first participation of a Korean institution in the agriculture and forestry sector of the EU's prestigious "Horizon Europe" program.

Supported by Horizon Europe, a large-scale research and innovation program of the European Union, the center plans to collaborate with a consortium of 24 institutions across nine European countries. This partnership will accelerate the development of eco-friendly pesticides derived from Jeju specialties and subtropical crops.

The primary goal of the project is to address the global issue of Fall Armyworm (FAW), a pest that has been spreading due to climate change. The natural pesticides being developed are expected to minimize crop damage caused by pests and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices worldwide.

Additionally, the center will integrate Jeju's unique bio-resources with its proprietary nano-decomposition technology to create effective and safe natural pesticides. This nanotechnology allows for the fine-particulation of insecticidal components, thereby maximizing their efficacy against pests while minimizing environmental impact.

Director Min Tae-sun emphasized, "The Jeju International Animal Research Center will continue to enhance the value of Jeju specialties and contribute to sustainable agricultural development through this project. The use of nanotechnology in natural pesticide development will address the shortcomings of chemical pesticides and promote safer food products."
