Creating education & communication space to remember and heal the pain of April 3
Jeju National University (JNU), led by President Kim Eel-hwan, held the ‘4·3 Dongbaek Jeongwon Signpost Opening Ceremony’ at the 4·3 Camellia Garden on December 17. The ceremony aimed to remember the pain and lessons of the Jeju 4·3 Incident, with the goal of passing them on to future generations and the local community.
The newly created 4·3 Camellia Garden is located in the northern field near the JNU gymnasium. The garden, which consists of 43 camellia trees and roses, is expected to become a new attraction at JNU, symbolizing healing and hope while honoring the pain of April 3.
In his congratulatory speech, JNU President Kim Eel-hwan stated, "The 4·3 Camellia Garden is not just a beautiful garden but also an educational and healing place that remembers the history of April 3. Additionally, the garden is expected to open a future of harmony and peace.“
Major officials attended the event, including JNU President Kim Eel-hwan, Kim Jong-min, Chairperson of the Jeju 4·3 Peace Foundation, JNU student council members, the president of the JNU student council, the president of the public service association, the president of the university union, and professors from the April 3 convergence major.
JNU's Graduate School has been offering the 4·3 Convergence Major Program since the second semester of the 2023 academic year. The program is designed to study and educate the historical significance and social lessons of the 4·3 Incident. It involves departments such as Korean Language and Literature, History, the General Social Education Major in the Department of Social Education, Sociology, and Political Science and Diplomacy, all contributing to systematically preserving the community's historical assets.
JNU plans to further strengthen the university’s educational role by inheriting the spirit of the 4·3 Incident and implementing various projects to engage with local communities.
