MSc candidate selected as Doosan scholarship recipient of KNS

Bu Ji-hwan, a Jeju National University student in the school’s postgraduate program of Energy and Chemical Engineering, has been selected to receive the Korean Nuclear Society (KNS) scholarship sponsored by Doosan Heavy Industry & Construction.
Since his undergraduate years, Bu has participated in the development of a portable gamma-ray imager with the world’s best features and the world’s first portable dual-particle imager with the support of the state-led Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning and Korea Foundation of Nuclear Safety.
His earlier performances led to the release of three articles in international journals, the registration of four domestic patents, and the application for three global patent registrations.
Technologies related to the portable radiation imager have been developed in line with the increasing concern over the safety of the users of radiation imagers as well as the growing demand for the use of the imagers. Particularly, efforts have been made to develop gamma-ray imagers and dual-particle imagers to ensure the safety of radiographers and others involved in the use of radiological equipment. These two devices visualize radiation to enable the location of radioactive substances, the measuring of radioactive levels, and the identification of the types of nuclides real time.
Hearing the news about his winning the scholarship, Bu said he will double his efforts to localize and commercialize new imagers and monitoring devices that could be useful not only in the fields of nuclear energy and radiation safety, but also in the fields of detecting radioactive substances at the ports and airports to prevent terrorist attacks and nuclear proliferation.
The certificate award ceremony will be held during the 2021 KNA Conference and Fall General Assembly on Oct. 20.
