Global Citizenship Education going viral among local schools

Applicants surging to make total participants to reach 5,000 in 50 schools in 2021

Jeju National University’s Global Citizenship Education Program has become a favored lecture in the recent months the university’s Jeju International Development Cooperation Center (JIDCC) announced today.

On Oct. 5, JIDCC and Jeju International Training Center affiliated with UNITAR (UNITAR Cifal Jeju/JITC) held a career development course for some 250 students in Halla Middle School and Pyoseon Elementary School.

JIDCC has worked with UNITAR to organize the educational program for students on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to the world’s peace, poverty, human rights, environment, and career issues.

The goal of the program is to raise the children’s awareness of global issues, and eventually help them grow up into global citizens who are willing to fulfill their responsibilities for the issues shared by all human communities.

Specifically, the students participating in the course learn about the global efforts to eliminate poverty, the impact of climate change and environmental issues, the concerns over human rights and child labor, the career development in the fields of international organizations and development assistance, the understanding of multiculturalism, and the practical efforts concerning SDGs.

The two organizers expect that the program will contribute to raising young global citizens with desirable attitudes and nurturing global talent to keep the world sustainable.

In the first half of 2021 alone, the JIDCC special education program will visit 13 elementary, middle, and high schools on Jeju Island to meet more than 1,000 students. The course is going even more viral in the second half of this year, with the number of yearly applicants surging to total 5,000 from 50 schools.

The course in the second half of 2021 will address the topics related to multiculturalism, which will involve field activities.

Those who need more information about the application may contact the organizers by phone (JIDCC: 064-754-8249 / UNITAR CIFAL Jeju: 064-735-6573) or by e-mail (jejugcde@gmail.com).
