Mechanical engineering professor earns world’s first EV charging certificate Profile 2 certification for OCPP 1.6 to solve interoperability and remote control issues

Kim Nam-jin, professor in the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, Jeju National University, has obtained the Profile 2 certification for Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) 1.6, given by the Open Charge Alliance (OCA).
Kim and an electric vehicle charging solution provider named Tardis Technology jointly participated in the Jeju Regional Evaluation Team of the state-led Regional Specialized Industry Promotion Project.
OCPP is a global standard that has been confirmed to be adopted by many countries in the world. The protocol is optimized for the plug-and-charge, vehicle-to-grid, and smart charging solutions by solving the currently inoperable communication protocols by charging service provider.
Winning the latest certification, Kim is expected to contribute to the nation’s EV charging industry, which has experienced standardization issues concerning the monitoring and remote control of charging infrastructure, the payment of charging service fees, and the management of related statistics.
According to Kim, the South Korean government plans to adopt Version 2.0 of OCPP 1.6, which would inspire Jeju province with the highest rate of EV distribution to lead the certification-related technologies. A more advanced solution such as OCPP 2.0 with a strengthened security function will be developed in the Jeju region, he added.
