Korean Speech Contest for foreigners in Jeju to be held online

Jeju National University’s Korean Language and Culture Center will host the 15th Korean Speech Contest for Foreigners in Jeju, marking the 575th anniversary of Hangul Day.

The contest was prepared to encourage foreigners residing in Jeju to improve their Korean language skills and learn more about the Korean culture. To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the center will hold the contest online by receiving a recorded video from each contestant.

Those foreigners who wish to enter the contest should produce a three to four-minute video image of his or her Korean speech and submit it with the center online by Oct. 29, 2021.

The bulletin board of the center’s website (http://malgeul.jejunu.ac.kr) contains more detailed information on writing the script and filming the video.

The speakers will be allowed to speak freely of any topic, but more scores will be given if the speech addresses living in Korea as a foreigner.

The event will be held for the General Contestants and the Undergraduate Contestants. Those who come from the ethnic Koreans in China or those who have won either the Grand Prize or the Gold Prize in a previous event will be ineligible to enter the contest.

One Grand Prize winner, who will be determined regardless of the category of the contestants, will receive the certificate presented by the president of Jeju National University, along with the gift worth 500,000 won.

One Gold Prize and Silver Prize winners and two Bronze Prize winners in each category will be awarded the school presidential certificate and the gift worth 100,000 to 300,000 won.

All the other contestants will be given a Gifticon in commemoration of their participation.
