Jeju National University’s Library is running a program on the traditional local lifestyle with the concept of humanities, the school library announced Thursday (Oct. 28).

The cultural program is being offered as a part of the national project, titled “2021 Humanities on the Road”. The state-led project is hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Korean Library Association.

During the program, Jeju National University’s Library invites experts in different fields for special lectures who will brief the participants on the eco-friendly lifestyle of Jeju residents from the perspective of humanities.

Throughout October, the program was offered every Tuesday and Saturday, featuring Yi Yong-kyu and Han In-duck who are professors teaching architecture and the local neighborhood sectioning system of Olle at Jeju National University. The other lectures in October included Heo Nam Choon, professor at Jeju National University, and Oh Young-ju, professor at Cheju Halla University, who introduced the participants to the healthy dietary culture of traditional local dishes of Jeju Island.

The participants also visited former joint pastureland sites and some of the areas that are currently influenced by climate crisis. For the final course of the October program, a historical course on the shamanistic rites was offered to revisit the culinary traditions reflected in the communal culture of Jeju residents.

In November, the program will highlight the local costumes in the Joseon era through lectures given by experts in the traditional textile patterns and dressing practices.
