International Development Cooperation Center Volunteered for Ocean

JNU’s International Development Cooperation Center (Director Lee, Gyeong-sang) performed a voluntary ocean cleanup at a sea farm called Sinpungsingchang located in Seongsan-eup on Nov. 6th.

During the work, 84 people took part in it. Members came from World Friends Korea Jeju (WFK), Global Teachers University (GTU), and students taking a course named ‘Understanding International Development Cooperation’ at JNU, as well as from Council for the Conservation of Jeju’s Maritime Environment.

All activities were conducted under COVID-19 quarantine guidelines to prevent infection. Participants collected municipal wastes including Styrofoam waste, waste tires, and glass bottles. This was in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goal No. 14 – Life Below Water as they pledged continued volunteering for maritime cleanups.

Jeju International Development Cooperation Center is the hub of Official Development Assistance (ODA) in the Jeju region. It was founded within JNU to revitalize ODA in Jeju and to internationalize Jeju through a Memorandum of Understanding between Jeju Special Self-governing Province, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and Jeju National University (JNU).
