The interest in cloned humans has been growing recently, particularly with Bong Joon-ho's latest movie Mickey17. In response, JNU prof. Park Se-pil’s views on cloned humans in Mickey17 have been drawing attention.
On March 12, the Hankook Ilbo published an article titled Expert's Perspective on Cloned Humans in Mickey17. In this article, prof. Park Se-pil, from JNU Biomedical Informatics, shared his thoughts on cloned humans.
When asked by the Hankook Ilbo, "If multiple cloned humans are born from one person, will they all have different personalities like in the movie?", Park replied, "Their personalities might be different.“
The article also highlighted that Park was the first person in the world to create a cloned pig with three genes (App, Tau, PS1) that contribute to causing human dementia.
In the interview, he explained, "We should not clone humans, but (naturally) cloned humans already exist. Identical twins are an example. In identical twins, the genes are 100% the same. So their phenotypes and genotypes are identical.“
He continued, "These twins have the same appearance. And if one baby is sick, cells or blood can be provided from the other. However, if they grow up in different environmental conditions, their characteristics will differ. This has been shown in research.“
He added, "Among identical twins, those who grew up in good conditions versus poor conditions not only have different personalities but also different acquired genotypes. Depending on the environment, even genetic diseases may manifest differently.“
prof. Park further explained, "If Einstein’s cells were replicated, it would be true that his IQ and phenotype could be 100% replicated. However, his ideas and thoughts could not be replicated.“
The Hankook Ilbo article, which includes the opinions of experts like prof. Park Se-pil regarding Mickey17, is available on the Hankook Ilbo website,
