JNU-Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Cooperation, KOICA ODA Project Selection

-Open a New Horizon for International Cooperation in Waste Management
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province has opened a new horizon in the field of international development cooperation by establishing an integrated waste management and resource circulation system with Indonesia.
JNU was selected for the first official development aid (ODA) project by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in collaboration with the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. This project aims to establish an integrated waste management and resource circulation system in Bontang, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The project is expected to be valued at a total of USD 9.9 million over five years, from 2026 to 2030.
Through this project, JNU will work closely with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province to establish a sustainable model for addressing environmental problems.
JNU experts played a key role in planning the project and have contributed significantly, including Prof. Kang Kyung-hee from the Department of Political Science & Diplomacy, Prof. Ko Jae-hac from the Department of Environmental Engineering, Kim Bae-sung, Director of the Center for International Development Cooperation (Applied Economics), Shin Eui-chul, Director, and Esther Esther, General Manager at the Jeju International Development Cooperation Center.
In particular, Prof. Kang has been conducting research in international politics and development cooperation, Prof. Ko has focused on environmental engineering and waste management, and Prof. Kim has worked on professional manpower input plans and business economics. This project offers an opportunity for JNU’s research capabilities to be utilized internationally.
JNU President Kim Eel-hwan said, "This project will serve as an important stepping stone to foster creative convergence talent, secure research competitiveness, create social value, and expand JNU's role in international cooperation and sustainable development."
