Former Supreme Court Justice Kim Sang-hwan began his career as a judge at the Busan District Court in 1994 after completing his 20th term at the Judicial Research and Training Institute.

He was later dispatched to the Constitutional Court and served as the first senior judge at the Seoul Central District Court, as well as the chief judge at the Seoul High Court, before being appointed as a Supreme Court justice in December 2018. He retired in December 2024 after serving as a judge for 30 years.
Kim served as the chief judge of the Jeju District Court for two years starting in 2006.

Notably, he was awarded the Jeju Honorary Residents' Card in 2022 while serving as the head of court administration. During this time, he revised the "Regulations on the Processing of Family Relations Registered Affairs under the Special Act on the Investigation of the Jeju 4∙3 Incident and Restoration of the Honor of Victims," contributing to the protection of victims and their bereaved families under the special law.

Pyo Myung-hwan, Dean of JNU School of Law, said, “Professor Kim Sang-hwan is expected to bring pride to JNU Law School students as a senior legal professional and serve as a mentor to students.”
