College of veterinary medicine volunteer for animal diagnosis

JNU College of Veterinary Medicine (Dean, Professor Son, Won-geun) announced on Nov. 17 that it plans to go on a voluntary work for animal diagnosis in Hangyeong, Jeju-si on Nov. 20 and in Andeok, Seogwipo on coming Dec. 18th.
As the Companion Animal Law, enacted in 2014, forces a fine (KRW 200,000 for the first time, 400,000 for the second and 600,000 for the third) with unregistered animals since Sep. 1st this year, the volunteers are to help with animal registration as well.
The volunteer is for the remote areas on the island where access to animal hospitals is limited. For households in Hangyeong where it is difficult for residents to visit the site of volunteer, some of the medical team will be dispatched in person to conduct vaccination and diagnosis.
Major activities include 1) vaccinations for rabies, 2) and for general infectious diseases, 3) extermination of parasitic diseases such as heartworms and 4) companion animal registration.
The voluntary team consists of 25 people from the College of Vet including clinical professors, vets, and students.
The College of Veterinary Medicine of JNU has been conducting the same work since 1992 in and outside Jeju. Their achievements have been renowned by the school’s committee for developing the National University Development Plan and were awarded with Excellency Prize in the 2020 JNU Non-curricular Achievement Forum.
