Basic science institute and Korean medicine institute hold joint seminar

JNU Research Institute for Basic Science (Director Kim, Myeong-sook) held its 5th combined seminar of 2021 with related research institute in Jeju on Nov. 25 at the 1st Building of the Natural Science Building.

JNU RIBS is operating regular seminary events throughout the year to foster researchers’ exchange and sharing research performance with other research institutes in Jeju. On this day, as the fifth guest, ‘Jeju Institute of Korean Medicine’ was invited.

The topic of the seminar was ‘Investigating Neuronal Cell Daeth Mechanism and Finding Natural Biomaterial to Improve Brain Disease,’ as being conducted in the JIKM. Song, Ji-hoon, senior researcher of JIKM, presented a study on finding high value-added commercialization of an extract by establishing libraries of functional components.

Professor Jeong, Eui-man of College of Pharmacy presented on ‘Development of treatment for ageing-related disease using redox signal adjustment.’ In the presentation, he mentioned the finding and effectiveness of an agent suppressing senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which is the cause of the activation of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NFκB).

Meanwhile, RIBS and JIKM, in July, concluded a business agreement to perform joint studies and exchange cooperation to contribute to the basic science in Jeju’s bioresource field.

RIBS intends to continue on with the regular seminars also in the next year to share the achievements of research institutes in Jeju.
