Jeju Special Self-Governing Province selected two Jeju National University professors as the winners of the 2021 Jeju Province Cultural Prize. |
According to the provincial government, Yoo Chul-in (Department of Philosophy) and Kim Sang-jae (Department of Mechatronics) will be awarded the prize for the academic category. |
Yoo is known for his in-depth study of Korean residents in Japan and Jeju April 3 Incident. He also led the development of the application for the inscription of the Culture of Jeju Haenyeo as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage of humanity. |
Kim has contributed to making outstanding research performances and leading regional research and development projects based on science and technologies. Particularly, the regular member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, has worked to create a science-friendly atmosphere in the local community.
The Jeju Special Province Cultural Prize was established in 1962 and has been awarded to outstanding individuals or groups that contributed greatly to the promotion of culture and arts and to the advancement of local society. As of last year, a total of 264 winners (259 individuals, 5 groups) won the prize.
The panel of 31 judges review the nominees for different categories to determine the winners in the plenary session, after which the decision is finalized by the provincial (acting) governor.

The 60th award ceremony will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Dec. 16 at Seolmundae Women’s Culture Center.
