Lee Chi-hoon, CEO of Fisheries Corporation CR, has recently received a prize awarded by the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries.

The 2021 Oceans and Fisheries Technology Commercialization, a national fair organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology of Food, Agriculture, and Forestry (IPET) selected Lee as the winner of its Oceans and Fisheries Ministerial Prize.

Fisheries Corporation CR, a Jeju National University (JNU) Technology Holding Company, has worked with the university since 2013 to co-implement the IPET’s Golden Seed project, successfully producing Hong Kong grouper, a valuable Serrandiae variety.

CR and JNU commercialized the technologies of producing fertilized eggs of Hong Kong groupers all year round and mass producing healthy seedlings. As a result, they improved the limited supply of the seedlings due to the spawning of the variety only in summer.

The recent technological development also shortened the years required for maternal fish to mature from three years to one year, greatly improving the efficiency of fertilized eggs.

The joint project team also succeeded in exporting Hong Kong grouper seedlings. Since 2017, the seedlings worth 1.4 million dollars in total have been exported to Malaysia and Singapore.

The new technologies have also contributed to the nation’s industrial development by selling seedlings to fish farms based on Jeju Island and in Southern regions.
