“With 70 years of achievements as one, JNU is ready to shine for all”

This is a new catchphrase of Jeju National University, which marks the 70th anniversary of its opening this year.

Jeju National University held the “Declaration Ceremony to Commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the School’s Opening” at the kick-off meeting for 2022 held at the university’s Ara Muse Hall on Monday (Jan. 3).

The catchphrase, announced during the declaration ceremony, contains the present-focused meaning of the university’s history of 70 years, as well as its forward-looking mission and hope.

JNU achieved rapid achievements and development in 2020 by forming a comprehensive university true to its name with the opening of the College of Pharmacy. The catchphrase expresses that the achievements of 70 years were possible because faculty and alumni made joint efforts, and above all because Jeju residents provided support and encouragement. The meaning was locally emphasized through the use of the Jeju word “Hondi” (“as one”).

The latter part of the catchphrase, “JNU is ready to shine for all” expresses the orientation of JNU’s future development. Specifically, it means the university should no longer be an ivory tower separated from the local community; rather, it has to play a role as the local community’s partner in leading and driving local development as long as it has its roots in Jeju society, the university explained.

The commemorative emblem took its motif from the existing UI (University Identity), which contains a spirit of challenge toward the future. The torch image representing truth, justice, and creation — the founding principles — was briefly but dynamically balanced in consideration of the combination of tradition and modernity. The number “7” contains the meaning of JNU’s leap toward the future. The number “0” means a dynamic and enterprising vigor and infinite growth toward the future by utilizing JNU’s UI.

President Song Seok-eon said in his New Year’s message, “The new year is a meaningful year for our university to celebrate its 70th anniversary. He also complimented the entire faculty and staff, saying “There are also those others who didn’t win the award today but have calmly fulfilled their responsibilities for our school’s development.”

Nevertheless, he said, "The year 2022 is a meaningful year for our university as this year marks its 70th anniversary.” However, “the recruitment rate of new students, which is directly linked to the decline in the school-age population, alongside the relevant reduction of the enrollment quota, the integration of departments, or other new forms of structural reform, will keep us checked on or repeatedly tested with regard to whether we are determinant to achieve sustainable growth,” he added. He also urged the JNU faculty and staff members to prepare now for 2030 when the decline in the school-age population reaches its peak.

“As the following 10 years from 2022 to 2031 requires seismic changes and innovations from JNU members, the school is working to design a mid- to long-term development plan in response,” he said. He then said he required a mid- to long-term development plan that would enable the faculty and staff members to preemptively respond to the changing environments, such as the declining school-age population and the fourth industrial revolution while helping enhance the competitiveness of the school.

"We are working on a mid- to long-term development plan to respond to the demand for a lot of change and innovation over the next 10 years from 2022 to 2031, and we ordered the plan to prepare projects to enhance university competitiveness while preemptively responding to the changing environment."

The event included △ watching promotional videos to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the school’s founding △ reporting on the progress in the past 70 years and commemorative events △ delivering the commemorative flag for the 70th anniversary △ announcing the year to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the school’s founding △ awarding excellent professors and exemplary employees, and △ awarding outstanding ideas and catchphrases for the 70th anniversary.

After the event, a soil mixing and commemorative planting ceremony was held at the grass square behind the university’s main building.
