16 billion won budget secured for new experimental animal center

Jeju National University secured 16 billion won for the budget required to establish an improved and standardized Experimental Animal Center, the university announced on Dec. 24.

Earlier on Dec. 3, the National Assembly passed the bill proposed by the Ministry of Education, which contains the said construction project.

The project will cost a total of 16 billion won, including 11 billion won for construction and 5 billion won for equipment. It has been promoted to increase research efficiency and enable ethical and safe animal testing on campus.

It is also aimed at responding to the demand for animal experiments in Jeju by establishing infrastructure that can be jointly used by local bio and pharmaceutical companies and industrial groups.

When the construction is completed in 2024, the center will feature a total floor area of 4,158㎡ with four stories above the ground.

Next year, the design budget of 525 million won will be invested to carry out a design contest. The university has been participating in a joint task force for experimental animal centers carried out by the National University of Korea since 2019.

In March 2020, the Jeju National University Experimental Animal Center Construction Promotion Committee was launched, headed by Sohn Won-geun, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, which has since worked to realize the project.

In March this year, the school completed a preliminary investigation to promote the construction in an effort to prepare for a substantive improvement of infrastructure in line with the standards for animal testing facilities under the Experimental Animal Act.
