Song Seok-eon, president of Jeju National University (JNU), said, “To strengthen the competitiveness of the nation’s tertiary education, the solution is to divert from the Seoul metropolitan area-centered college hierarchy and foster research-oriented regional universities.”

Before ending his tenure as the JNU president, the law professor had a meeting with the local media for an interview. “The nation’s tertiary education is now far behind the average of advanced OECD countries. To strengthen the national competitiveness, we need to dramatically strengthen the competitiveness of our tertiary education,” he stressed.

After taking office, Song made strenuous efforts with his colleagues and students to create an optimal educational and research environment and establish a stable foundation for industry-academic cooperation, with the vision of “The university faithful to the basics and the university prepared for the future”.

During his tenure, JNU made achievements such as opening the College of Pharmacy, establishing departments focusing on advanced technologies, earning the qualification as a subsidiary for general financial support for universities, winning the accreditation for internationalized educational capabilities, achieving 100% of new student enrollment rates, and being designated as an excellent student counseling institution and institution recognized for safe laboratory environments.

“I will return to my department as a professor after finishing my term as president, but I will not stop cheering and making efforts for the development of JNU and a balanced regional and national growth,” he pledged.
