Jeju National University’s Software Certification Center has been authorized as Jeju’s first international testing agency in the software field by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) under the National Institute of Technology and Standards.

The center’s announcement on the authorization was announced on Friday (Dec. 31), where it explained that the international official recognition was realized based on the support of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province (Future Strategy Division). KOLAS selected the center to undertake its mission to certify software items under the Framework Act on National Standards, the Act on the Management of Conformity Assessment, Etc., and general requirements for the conformity of testing and calibrating agencies (KS Q ISO/IEC 17025:2017).

The recent authorization will apply to testing five standards, including ISO/IEC 25023, ISO/IEC 25051, KS X ISO/IEC 25023, KS X ISO/IEC 25051, and the Science and ICT Ministerial Announcement No. 2020-84.

Accreditation for these standards requires the test items such as the tested software’s functional suitability, performance efficiency, compatibility, reliability, security, maintenance capacity, portability, and product manual.

Additionally, test reports are mutually recognized and have equal effects to those issued by 102 organizations in 104 countries that have joined the ILAC-MRA and 46 organizations in 28 countries that have joined the APAC-MRA.

Yang Geun-tak, technical manager of Jeju National University’s Software Certification Center, said the center’s latest achievement means that now local companies can obtain KOLAS International Accreditation Test Reports, issued by international accredited testing institutions in the province. This will allow companies to use it for quality improvement, reliability testing, and solution development for various industries.”

“We can provide more opportunities to companies in the province by certifying the level of achieving the goal of government research and development tasks and using the results as evaluation indicators of software and system quality for procurement and general bidding,” he added.

With the designation of an authorized testing agency, Jeju National University’s Software Certification Center will be able to leap forward as a regional hub for software quality innovation that leads to strengthening the competitiveness of local information technology and software companies.

In particular, the new designation is expected to contribute greatly to strengthening software development capabilities and quality competitiveness in the region by resolving difficulties in software evaluation and test procedures that used to be consigned to other regions.

In the future, the university’s Software Certification Center will work for additional recognition for a balanced development of various industries related to artificial intelligence and big data fields, while strengthening regional competitiveness.

In doing so, it will continue to make efforts to grow into an internationally certified testing agency that can provide locally customized services and thus support local artificial intelligence and big data industries.
