Kim Chang-hee, president of BMI Corp. contributed 100 million won to the Jeju National University Development Fund Wednesday (Dec. 29).
Kim, a Jeju National University graduate, has steadily donated 100 million won to his alma mater for three consecutive years since 2019. His gross contribution so far has reached 300 million won this year.
Kim was born in Jeoji-ri, a mountainous village in Jeju Island’s western town of Hankyeong-myeon. Despite the limitations of being a regional university graduate and a former salesman, his post was elevated to Vice Chairman of Hyundai Engineering & Construction in 2011. His success story is considered one of the most outstanding cases in Korean business circles.
When serving as Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, he attracted damage relief support worth 1 billion won from his company in 2007 when Typhoon Nari severely hit Jeju Island. Under his leadership, the company also contributed 1.6 billion won to Jeju National University for its development fund.
In honor of his contributions to the local community, Jeju National University awarded him an honorary doctorate in business administration in 2012.
After retiring from Hyundai Motor Group, Kim acquired BMI Crop., a manufacturer specializing in Hyundai-Kia Motors’ front and module in 2014. As of 2020, BMI Corp. has grown into a solid mid-sized company with sales of 160.5 billion won and 270 employees.
