Lexicologist Kim Soon Ja publishes her study of Jeju vernacular glossary
A new version of Jeju's vernacular glossary based on the diversity of humanity, nature and environment has appeared in a book form collecting research papers published by the author, Kim Soon Ja, staff researcher, JNU Korean Language Institute.
Kim Soon Ja's latest book entitled "A Study of Jeju Island Vernacular Glossary" (New Edition, 312 pp., 18,000 won) is unique in that she collected the vocabularies as they were used by the islanders in their various livelihood settings.
To help preserve some of the words in near extinction, Ms. Kim also studied the Jeju glossary from an ecological point of view.
Chapters of the book include "Jeju vernacular and sea", "Jeju dialect and culture", and "vocabularies for Jeju studies." In addition, "Names of conch horn, top shell, abalone", "Names of fish in Jeju dialect" and several other topics are covered in the publication.
