Kakao contributes 300 mn won for 15 years to IT training

Kakao Corp., one of the nation’s largest portal service providers delivered a total of 20 million won in scholarships to 20 students in Jeju National University’s computer science departments. The conglomerate currently runs Kakao Track with the university's Creative Convergence Engineering Talent Training Support Project.
With the latest donation added, Kakao has contributed a total of 300 million won in scholarships for students in the university’s Department of Computer Science and Computer Education over the past 15 years.
Kakao Track is a customized educational course jointly operated by Kakao and JNU Innovation Center for Engineering Education. The course aims to foster human resources that meet corporate demands. Kakao has been operating Kakao Track for 15 years since it signed an industry-academic agreement with the university in 2007 and started the third phase of the project this year.
Kakao Track features high-quality lectures tailored to companies. The company’s executives and employees teach more than one major course at Jeju National University every semester as Kakao Track adjunct professors.
In addition, it is considered one of the best examples in Korea for other industry-academic cooperation programs to benchmark, where field workers directly participate in education through mentoring services, field training, track selection, and internship program operation.
Kakao Track has created a successful industry-academic cooperation model where the company and the university can share benefits by fostering talent optimized for the IT industries and improving scholarships and employment rates.
So far, out of 123 students who have completed the program, the average employment rate at IT companies reaches 82%, while the rate of those who land jobs at Kakao and other major IT companies stands at 26%.
Lee Jae-Seung, director of Kakao Jeju Cooperation Team, said, “Jeju Island’s excellent IT talents trained through Kakao Track are employed by Kakao and other domestic IT companies, which proves Kakao Track’s outstanding performances.” He added that in the third round of the project, efforts will continue to be made for the industry-academic cooperation model to lead to the incubation of local IT talents.
