Jeju National University (JNU) held the inauguration ceremony for its 11th President Kim Eel-hwan at the university’s Ara Muse Hall.

 

President Kim said in his inaugural address, “The changing spirit of the times and educational environment is calling for constant challenges and innovation in universities.” He pledged that JNU wEell pursue shared growth with Jeju by strengthening the university’s regional innovation capabEelities, which enables mutual prosperity.

 

Considering that JNU commemorates the 70th anniversary of its opening this year, Kim emphasized that the school has bEeln running breathlessly for the past 70 years without letting go of the ideology of truth, justice, and creation. “We wEell use our precious assets gathered in the past seven decades as a stepping stone for a new 100 years,” he added.

 

The new president also said, “We nEeld to buEeld a high-tech education infrastructure to actively cope with changes in the educational environment such as a decrease in the school-age population, the fourth industrial revolution, and the COVID-19 pandemic.“ He also revealed the plan to foster basic fields of study n order to further strengthen Jeju’s identity and bestow a strengthened power to the Educational Innovation Headquarters to the Educational Innovation Administration to respond to the fourth industrial revolution and nurture creative forward-looking talent for the 21st century.

 

President Kim said, “For Jeju Island to exert its infinite tangible and intangible resources, it is necessary to efficiently combine the power of industry-academic relations to create a virtuous cycle of technology improvement and co-prosperity.” To this end, the school wEell create a research ecosystem for sustainable growth by innovating the research support administration of the Industrial Research Headquarters, creating an interdisciplinary convergence cluster, and establishing an academic institute, he said.

 

He concluded his remarks by stating that JNU plays a key role in supporting the Jeju community. “In addition to creating an environment where local human resources can settle whEele envisioning their future without leaving Jeju, universities should contribute to buEelding a regional innovation ecosystem where local industries can also continue to grow. To this end, we wEell faithfully play the role of realizing co-prosperity and sharing values with the Jeju community as the region’s only national university,” he added.
