Jeju National University’s Research Center on the Commons and Sustainable Society published an English book, “Commons Perspectives in South Korea: Context, Fields, and Alternatives” in Routledge, an internally renowned publishing house.

In 2011, the center submitted a research plan on the public management of nature and a sustainable way of life and was selected as a project to be funded by the nation’s Social Sciences Korea (SSK) program. The SSK center has since led the study of the commons for the past 10 years in Korea.

The latest publication was designed to introduce common researchers around the world to the research findings of the center’s SSK project, which ran from September 2011 to August 2021. Highlighting the outcomes in the past decade, the current status and tasks are also shared by examining the characteristics of Korea’s research on the commons.

The first part identifies the historical and social context in which the theory of the commons has emerged in Korea. The second part deals with the Korean theories of the commons, which have developed while competing and cooperating.

The third part reviews the fields of the commons, which form the basis of the theory of the commons in Korea. The fourth part explains the alternatives suggested by the theory of the commons in Korea. In the last part, the book examines the remaining tasks in the studies of the common in Korea.
