In compliance with the central government’s infrastructural assessment entailing reduction in admission, Jeju National University plans to admit 2090 freshmen by cutting the enrollment by 234 (corresponding to 10% of the current enrollment) by year 2017.
In addition, 11 academic departments (faculties) will merge to 5 and a new Department of Sports Education will be established. As of Academic Year 2014, the university consists of 12 colleges, 10 faculties and 51 academic departments, which will be restructured to 12 colleges, 9 faculties and 46 academic departments by Academic Year 2017.
These infrastructural reform plans were announced at a presidential press conference yesterday (February 12, 2015).
Other changes include the renaming of the Faculty of Chemistry and Cosmetics to the Department of Chemistry and Cosmetics, the Faculty of Physical Education to the Department of Physical Education, and consolidate the Departments of Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Electrical Engineering to the Faculty (tentative) of Electrical, Electronic, Communication and Computer Science.
A consolidation plan calls for the Faculty (tentative) of Mechanical, Mega, Energy and Chemical Engineering from the present Departments of Megatronics, Energy Engineering and Biochemical Engineering, the Faculty of Fine Art to the Department of Fine Art, etc.
To meet the societal demand, the College of Education will establish a new Department of Sports Education.
President Huh stated that after an intramural evaluation process a proposal describing the above changes has been submitted to the Ministry of Education for approval.

President Huh also commented on Academic Year 2016 freshman screening and recruiting plans for superior students at the press gathering, with an increase in rolling admission to 34.3% (compared to the current 30.2%).
At the conclusion of the press briefing, President Huh noted that the university will observe its 63rd anniversary this year and called for Jeju residents to double up their enthusiastic and responsive support for the strive for excellence as a regionally leading national university.
