Prof. Kim Do-hee’s article published in journal with high citation index

Prof. Kim Do-hee (Department of Pharmacology) in Jeju National University’s Interdisciplinary Program on Next-Generation Convergence Science and Technology published a paper in Nucleic Acids Research. The international journal is globally renowned with the top 2.56% citation index based on the Journal City Reports).

The paper is titled, “Role of Pema in the Staphylococcus aureus PemIK toxin-antitoxin complex: PemI controls PemK by acting as a PemK loop mimic”.

In the paper, she successfully interpreted the three-dimensional structure of PemK, a toxin protein derived from Staphylococcus aureus (a gram-positive bacterium), and PemlK, a toxin-antitoxin conjugate protein, using X-ray crystallography.

She also conducted a biological analysis to identify the activation site of the toxin protein and to decompose the pathogen’s messenger RNA through activity maintenance.

Kim said the results of her study revealed three-dimensional structural information which can design substances that interfere with the binding of PemK and Peml and suggested a new concept of antibiotics that can induce pathogens to self-destruct.
