Journalism students mount recycling campaign using Big Data analysis
Jeju National University students are mounting campaign for rubbish recycling by using Big Data analysis in the rest area of the College of Social Sciences under a thematic banner of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We can!” next Friday (from noon, May 22, 2015).
A re-cycling practice booth will be set up there for the participating students to convert the abandoned goods to candles, vases, socks, dolls, and other usable products.
Leading the campaign are Journalism & Media seniors Kim Da Young, Chung Eun Song, Lee Jung Bin and their classmates under the supervision of Professor Ahn Do Hyun of Capstone Design class.
The campaign goes beyond mere recycling of rubbish items, but shows how the abandoned goods can be “upgraded” and turn them into newly designed products in a process termed “up-cycling.”
For the up-cycling process, the JNU campaigners of “We can reuse” theme will be extracting “recycling”-related articles from New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, USA Today, LA Times, etc. They will then use Big Data “R” analysis to search for recyclable items which will be converted into useful products.
The participants decided to call themselves “3R” to stand for the three initials in Reduce Reuse and Recycle.
Products generated from the campaign will be displayed at the Capstone Design Exhibition next month (June 4, 2015).
