In celebration of the 70th anniversary of JNU, the monument, representing ‘Jeju’s first training institute for elementary school teachers, was also erected.

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of JNU, Teachers College, Jeju National University (Sara Campus, Vice President Ko Jeon)  held the ‘Relocation and unveiling Ceremony for the contribution monument of College of Education, JNU’ on the 13th of May at the Sara Campus.

The Monument to the Contribution of College of Education, JNU, (Geonibdongmin Gyoyugbaljeon Yeonggubulmangbi) is the monument commemorating 23 residents of Geonip-dong, who established the fund in November 1955 to help the Provincial Teachers School overcome its financial difficulties that had been ongoing since the opening of the school on April 1st in 1953, three months before the Korean War ceasefire.  This monument was installed at Jeju Girls Commercial High School, which was the site of an old Teachers College, but was moved to the old site of the former Geonip-dong office after the school was moved to the current campus in Hwabuk-dong (November 17, 1972).

Teachers College, JNU believes that the monument is valuable as the historical material for the development of the university, and therefore moved it to Sarah Campus where an unveiling ceremony was held in front of the university's main building to commemorate the 70th anniversary of JNU’s opening.

The ceremony was attended by President Kim Eel-hwan and other major university officials including Kang Seung-hwa, president of the alumni association of Teachers College, JNU, Kim Tae-sik, the chief of Geonip-dong Village, Kim Chang-geon, the head of the village, and Ko Ga-yeon, the principal of an Jeju National University Elementary School.

Meanwhile, the Teachers College also held an unveiling ceremony for ‘The site of the first elementary school teacher training institution on Jeju Island’, at Jeju Buk Elementary School during the morning. Jeju Buk Elementary School is the cradle of teacher training where the first elementary school teacher class in Jeju was established (July 20, 1946). Accordingly, the monument was erected to commemorate the will of alumni, faculty, and students of Teachers College of JNU and to publicize the significance of the educational history to the future generation.
