Establishment of JNU Branch of ‘UKNUP’ Professor Kim Jong-woo as President of JNU Branch

The JNU branch of the Union of Korea National University Professors (UKNUP) held a foundation conference.

 

At the conference, Professor Jong-woo Kim (Department of Elementary Education, College of Education) was elected as the branch president of JNU.

 

Jeju National University Professors Association (President Oh Hong-sik, Major in Biological Education at College of Education) said it has been preparing for establishing JNU branch of the Union since January 2021, and the foundation conference was held as the COVID-19 situation has improved somewhat.

 

The JNU branch of UKNUP said in its launch declaration, “The reason launch the JNU Branch of UKNUP is to free up research and education at universities and lay the foundation for making universities university-like.”

 

In addition, it stressed "It aims for universities centered on research and education in JNU, and it will make efforts to restore the freedom, autonomy and publicity of national and public universities guaranteed by the Constitution in line with UKNUP.

 

It also emphasized that, “The establishment of JNU branch of UKNUP today will be a new milestone after the 70th anniversary of JNU.”

 

The Jeju National University Professors' Association said “UKNUP submitted the union the establishment report to the Ministry of Employment and Labor on April 1st, 2020. The union a great hope for higher education reform by presenting the following key policy directions: Establishment of democratic university management structure of national and public universities realization of university autonomy and academic freedom, improving the quality of education and of teaching authority and guarantee of teaching status; and the construction of national and public universities contributing to the development of a democratic society, etc.”
