-Vision and Possibilities of Science & Technology with ‘Graphene and Future Materials’
Jeju National University (President Kim Eel-hwan) successfully concluded its first Nobel Laureate Invitation Seminar on June 18, held in the auditorium of the 3rd Engineering Building at the College of Engineering.
The event was co-hosted by the College of Engineering (Dean Kim Sang-jae) and the Graduate Innovation Office (Head Kang Hee-kyoung), and co-organized by eight institutions, including the Green Hydrogen Glocal Research Center (RLRC, Director Kim Sang-jae).
Sir Konstantin S. Novoselov, co-discoverer of graphene and recipient of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics, delivered a lecture titled “Materials for the Future.” Currently a professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Professor Novoselov is a global leader in graphene and two-dimensional materials research.
The seminar was attended by approximately 300 participants, including professors and graduate students from Jeju National University, as well as students from Ohhyeon High School, Shinseong Girls’ High School, and Jungang Girls’ High School.
Professor Novoselov introduced the unique properties and application areas of graphene, providing concrete examples of how its multidimensional traits—such as thermal conductivity, flexibility, and transparency—are being utilized in industries including sensors, semiconductors, water purification, and communication devices.
He remarked, “We are now living in an era where we have the technology to design and combine materials at the atomic level,” and shared a vision for the future in which “materials themselves will evolve into smart, functional components that can serve as sensors, processors, and actuators all at once.”
