Jeju Black Cattle Research Center launched

For the purpose of research and development to industrialize Jeju black cows, a new center was launched at an opening ceremony held on the campus yesterday (December 10, 2015). The new research center, “Jeju Cattle Research Center,” is located on the 4th floor of University Laboratory Facilities Hall and will be directed by Professor Park Se Pil.
President Huh Hyang Jin and Mr. Lee Sang Gil, Director, Korea Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (iPET) headed the group of Jeju Provincial Government and university officials at the opening event. Guests included black cow breeders and agricultural and animal husbandry extension scientists.
The Jeju National University center was awarded a ten-year grant amounting to 20.6 billion won this year. Director Park heads the eight research teams collaborating to achieve the center aims, especially breeding the black cows in an industrial scale.
The eight teams include Jeju National University, Yeunnam University, Kunkook University, Mirae CellBio, Seogwipo Animal Husbandry Cooperative, Nong Hyup Animal Husbandry Research Institute, and Chunji Farm Coperative.
Main research projects of the center include △breeding of Jeju black cattle through advanced BT technology △development of breeding and feeding technology △development of brand name products for industrialization.
Jeju Black Cows were designated National Natural Monument No. 546 in 2013. Beef meat from the animals is well known for its indigenous flavor and taste; in fact, it won the certification of being “Ark of Taste” at the 2013 International Slow Food Fair.The center aims to scale up the breeding of the cattle.
Facing the near extinction, Jeju National University Stem Cell Research Center directed by Professor Park Se Pil developed a ultrafast cooling-thawing technique to clone the black cow eggs, eventually succeeding to generate the cloned animals a few years ago.
