Prof. Song Woo-ram selected as the recipient of the 15th Yeocheon Ecology Award
Professor Woo-Ram Song of the Department of Biology at Jeju National University was selected as the recipient of the 15th Yeocheon Ecology Award. The winner will be awarded a cash prize of 15 million KRW along with a plaque.
The 'Yeocheon Ecology Award' was enacted in 2005 based on a fund donated by the late Kim Jun-ho, an emeritus professor of Seoul National University to the Yeocheon Ecological Research Association (Chairperson Jeong Yeon-suk, Kangwon National University). The award is to commend next-generation ecologists with outstanding research achievements in the field of basic ecology.
Professor Song published a paper in <Scientific Reports> in March 2019 on the effect of sub-vegetation and deciduous layers on the transition from pine forest to oak forest. In this paper, Professor Song was recognized for his achievements in revealing that the lower vegetation under the pine forest and the deciduous layer under the quercus mongolica forest acts as important limiting factors in the forest transition process.
Professor Song also made research achievements in various fields such as identification of invasion mechanisms of foreign plants, development of environmental and ecological toxicity evaluation techniques, and identification of differences in adaptation of aquatic plants according to water depth in the field of plant ecology.
Currently, Professor Song is conducting research on the eco-toxicity of nano materials and micro-plastics, the conservation of rare plants in Gotjawal, the introduction of green roofs in response to climate change, and the distribution and management of invasive alien species.
