Jeju National University Hospital signed a MOU with Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions of Japan for the introduction of Heavy Ion Therapy System(HITS).

The HITS center, which will be built on a site of 125,620㎡, is the project with a total investment of 500 billion KRW, and aims to start treatment in 2026.

The signing ceremony was held in the form of a two-way videoconference in Korea and Japan. From Korea, six people attended the ceremony, including Kim Eel-hwan, President of JNU, Song Byung-cheol, Director of Jeju National University Hospital, Kang Tae-hyeon, President of HIRT KOREA, and Lee Ki-woon, President of CCG Investment Asia Limited. CGS-CIMB Group. From Japan, five people, including Daisuke Murata, General Manager of Toshiba business division, and Hirohiko Tsujii, former head of QST Hospital.

This MOU stipulates the role of each for the establishment and operation of the hospital with the participation of all institutions including investment companies, management companies and hospitals for the introduction of HITS in Jeju. JNU Hospital plans to conduct treatment and research using heavy particle accelerators based on mutual exchange with Toshiba.

Heavy ion therapy is a treatment that destroys cancer by accelerating carbon ions to 70% of the speed of light with a heavy particle accelerator, and those ions are directly shot at the patient. When the accelerated carbon ion particles collide with cancer cells, they cause an explosion, killing cancer cell DNA and cancer tissues. Because it protects normal cells as much as possible and intensively irradiates cancer cells, it has a high therapeutic effect and few side effects, so it is called “dream cancer treatment technology.”

In Korea, Yonsei Medical Center and Seoul National University Hospital signed a contract to introduce HITS. Yonsei Medical Center plans to start the treatment next year. When HITS Center at Jeju National University Hospital is built in Jeju, it will be the third HITS Center in Korea.
