Technology agreement with Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology JNU and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute safety management group

The institute for Nuclear Science and Technology JNU (Director, Prof. Choi Soo-seok) and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute Safety Management Team (Director, Dr. Lee Wan-ro) signed an agreement (Memorandum of Agreement, MOA) for cooperation in environmental radioactivity analysis and monitoring technology at Jeju National University.
The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute is a world-class nuclear research and development institute, and the safety management team performs various safety management tasks such as radiation monitoring of nuclear facilities in accordance with various regulatory laws and conducts research and development related to environmental radiation evaluation.
The Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology JNU is the only educational and research institution specializing in nuclear and radiation in the Jeju region. It has taken its positions as a specialized institution for radioactivity safety in Jeju Province as well as JNU through food radioactivity tests and environmental radioactivity measurements.
Through this MOA, the two organizations agreed to advance everyday radiation safety activities by sharing technological capabilities and human resources.
In particular, they decided to continue to cooperate on the analysis, monitoring technology, education and developing human resource for radioactive strontium (Sr-90) and tritium in the Jeju seawater.
Professor Choi said, “Through the MOA, we can share and further develope our professional technology for environmental radiation analysis and monitoring. In addition, infrastructure and manpower will be expanded to strengthen radiation monitoring in Jeju waters, which has recently emerged as an issue.”
Meanwhile, the Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology JNU conducts radiation tests on agricultural and fishery products, underground water, and water and sewage in Jeju. Moreover it collects and analyzes regional environmental radiation information at the Jeju Regional Radiation Measurement Center located in the research center.
