Professor Park Se Pil (Director, Stem Cell Research Center) of the Jeju National University Faculty of Biotechnology is this year’s recipient of the Proud Jejuan Award at a ceremony held in Mason Glade Hotel yesterday (December 29, 2015).

The annual Proud Jejuan award program was established by Jeju Daily and sponsored by Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office. Dr. Park won the award in the education and academy division.

Professor Park was graduated from the Jeju National University Department of Animal Husbandry, and since then established himself as one of the pioneering researchers in the field of animal cloning and stem cell research.

He obtained a U.S. patent right for developing the stem cell technology based on human embryo in 2005. In collaboration with Mirae Biotechnology Research Institute where he held a joint faculty appointment, he was instrumental in cloning the near extinct Jeju black cows in 2009.

As the result of Professor Park’s success in rescuing the Jeju black cows from their extinction, the animals have been designated Natural Monument 546 in 2013. For the developmental contributions to the potential industrial scale breeding of Jeju black cows, Dr. Park received the 17th technology grand prize from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food last year.

In recent years, Professor Park applied somatic cell induced pluripotent stem cells to cultivate and differentiate the heart muscle cells, getting attention to his work internationally.

The award ceremony was attended by Deputy Governor Kwon Young Soo and other governmental and civic leaders.
