Jeju black cattle coop launched with government support

The new Jeju Black Cattle Cooperative was organized with coop members from cattle industry and ranches, academia, research community, and consumers. The organization was established by 21 charter members of the coop to develop and expand the Jeju black cattle industry in Jeju Island. An inaugural meeting was held in JNU Shared Research Laboratory on the campus last week (February 1, 2016).

Jeju black cows earned a national natural monument designation (No. 546) in July 2013, which served as the Impetus to protect the germlines, and establish the breeding and industrialization plans.

Mr. Kim Kwon Ho, CEO, Samda Chungjung Black Cows Farm, was elected as the first president of the coop. Other officers were also appointed at the inaugural meeting.

With the establishment of the coop, the national project of Jeju black cow breeding and industrialization being pursued by Jeju National University Stem Cell Research Center is expected to be accelerated.

As of December 2014, Jeju black cows number only 1,637 heads.
