First successful liver transplant operation in Jeju accomplished at JNU Hospital

Patients suffering from inflammation of the liver and other critical liver diseases in Jeju have a good news that they can have their liver transplantations done here at home!

Jeju National University Hospital (Kang Sung Ha, Hospital President) announced over the weekend (March 6, 2016) that Professor Kim Young Gyu and his team of the Department of Surgery successfully conducted the liver transplant operation for the first time in Jeju region last month (February 26, 2016).

According to the announcement, patient Mr. Park (34) with a severe liver cirrhosis problem resulting from B-type hepatitis underwent a surgical operation involving the replacement of his cancerous liver with a healthy organ donated by his family relative. A liver transplant was the only viable option the patient had, it was noted in the hospital announcement.

Currently, the patient is recuperating satisfactorily at the hospital after a week of post transplantation monitoring.

The extremely complex and delicate liver transplantation usually takes about ten hours of surgical procedure; the JNU team was able to satisfactorily achieve the operation in seven hours.

Jeju National University Hospital is well equipped for the transplantation of the liver, thanks to the careful preparations for the last two years. With the surgical expertise, the hospital is ready to treat other hepatitis cases in the future.

Commenting on the occasion of the announcement, Professor Kim Young Gyu assured that JNU hospital is well equipped for liver transplant operation, comparable in both facilities and expertise to those available at major general hospitals in the Seoul area.

“Patients in Jeju no longer have to frequent mainland hospitals for liver transplantation and other critical procedures anymore, as the local university hospital can provide competent surgical and clinical services for Jeju residents,” he said.
