JNU President Huh Hyang Jin elected as head of Korean Council for University Education

Jeju National University President Huh Hyang Jin was elected as the 22nd President of the Korean Council for University Education at its annual meeting held in the council's Seoul headquarter last Friday (April 8, 2016). He will head the council for one year (until April 7, 2017).

Inauguration of the new council president was attended by Dr. Cho Wan Kyu, former Minister of Education, the presidents of the council member universities, and other higher education officials.

In accepting the presidency of the council, JNU President Huh emphasized the importance of the council and its president in meeting the challenges facing the nation's higher education institutions.

"Our universities must deal with such critical issues as budgetary constraints and the declining enrollment entailing infrastructural reform," he remarked, and the new council president urged to  cooperate among the nation's higher education institutions, both public and private, rather than compete for the limited financial and student pools.

He also addressed the role of the council in fulfilling the duties of the higher education institutions through educating superior students and promoting research competitiveness: △ Facilitate cooperation among public and private higher education institutions and the council playing active role, △ foresee difficulties and propose responsible policies in overcoming the problem of declining enrollment, △  minimize unnecessary and excessive  competition for college admission,  △ improve the evaluative system of higher education institutions, and  △ foster  international collaborations to raise the global status of Korean higher education institutions.

President Huh served in a number of important local, regional and national positions, especially in higher education area. He is in the second term of his presidency for Jeju National University.
