JNU signs MOU with WMO to establish UN Center to study climate and weather changes

Jeju National University signed the bilateral MOU with World Meteorology Organization to establish an international United Nations Educational Center to provisionally study the global climate and weather changes last Monday (April 18, 2016).

The MOU was signed by Mr. Yang Deok Soon, Vice President for Planning at Jeju National University and Executive Director David Carlson of World Climate Research Program (WCRP).

As a UN affiliate organization, the WMO administers its meteorological program IPCC (Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change) which investigates global climate and weather changes.

Jeju National University and WMO are expected to initiate the program of educating climate and weather experts inviting meteorologists, relevant government officials, and NGO representatives from Southeast Asiatic Zone, especially to discuss the strategy for preventing climate and ocean disasters.

The UN initiated program is being implemented for the first time in Asia, and JNU is positioned to globalize its research outlook through the collaborative initiative with WMO. To facilitate the implementation, Vice President for Planning Yang Deok Soon will visit WMO in Geneva, Switzerland, next June.

In the meanwhile, land and oceanic climate organizations such as Jeju Sea Grant Center, Korean Institute for Meteorology and Korean government agencies are expected to participate in the climate study initiative.

On the basis of the MOU and its inaugural establishment of the education center, Jeju National University (President Huh Hyang Jin) and WMO Director anticipate to discuss collaborative plans for setting up a permanent UN Education Center in Jeju next year.
