A hanging board ceremony was held to announce the establishment of a children’s environmental public health and birth cohort health program (Hong Sung Cheol, Center Director) at Jeju Public Health Clinic and Seogwipo Public Health Clinic last Thursday (April 14, 2016). The cohort program is sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Jeju National University.

The Jeju and Seogwipo Public Health Clinics call for 400 pregnant women by April 25 and up to 2,000 by 2019. In addition, Jeju Dana Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital accepts 150 pregnant women (with pregnancy less than 20 weeks) from Jeju region by 2017.

The Ministry of Environment has been conducting a nationwide study of the effects of environmental pollutants on children’s health and to control the environmentally derived diseases in children under the environmental public health birth cohort (Ko-CHENS) program. The study is expected to run through 2036 for 22 years at a cost of 44.5 billion won.
