Wild Animal Center releases healthy fairy pitta into nature

Jeju National University Wild Animal Rescue Center (Professor Yoon Young Min, Director) released a rare bird, “Fairy Pitta,” into the nature after having been fully rehabilitated from a critical condition earlier today (May 18, 2016). The bird is designed as a near extinct species by the International Union of the Conservation of Nature.

The bird was found trapped and utterly exhausted in the eaves of a private home in Yongdam district in Jeju during the rainstorm last Sunday (May 15, 2016).

The animal center tagged the bird with a monitoring number to trace its flight path after released.

The rare bird is a summer season migrator known to have returned to Jeju after spending the winter in Southeast Asia. It comes back to its “homeland” for reproduction every May and stays in Jeju until October.

The JNU center rescued three Fairy pitta and released to the wild after recovery from injuries last year.
