Popularity of ‘Visiting Education on Global Citizenship’ for the youth
For elementary, middle and high school students in Jeju, the joint project, ‘Visiting Education on Global Citizenship’, conducted by Jeju National University's Jeju International Development Cooperation Center (Director, Shin Eui-Chul) and the United Nations Training and Research Organization (UNITAR) Jeju International Training Center (Director, Choi Hong-Ki) is gaining popularity.
According to the Jeju International Development Cooperation Center (JIDC), the number of education targets in the second half of this year amounts to 4,500 students in 35 schools. The number is an increase of 17 participating schools and 800 students from 3,700 in 18 schools in the first half of 2022.
The number of schools participating in the application for global citizenship education is increasing because the followings of educational programs are attracting students' interest; △ the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) for future generations △ eradication of poverty △ climate change impact and environmental issues △ human rights △ child labor issues △ understanding of multiculturalism △ advance into international organizations and development cooperation fields and career exploration
Another popular factor, the JIDC explained, is that marriage immigrant women who are “world citizens” can participate as lecturers and experience the educational effect.
15 marriage migrant women participate as global citizenship education instructors, who are from five countries including China, Vietnam, Japan, Mongolia and the Philippines.
Shin Eui-cheol, Director of the Jeju International Development Cooperation Center, said, “We will do our best to improve the quality of education so that this education can become a curriculum helping local youths to develop their ability to understand the diversity of the glocal era and to become ‘global talents’ who act responsibly in the global community.”
