Chung Sang Ki of Stem Cell Center wins superior research award

Chung Sang Ki, Research Fellow and Masters degree candidate from the Jeju National University Stem Cell Research Center (Professor Park Se Pil, Director) came away with a superior research presentation award from the 2016 Korean Society of Animal Reproduction annual meeting held in Chonbuk National University last week (June 16~17, 2016).

The award winning paper was entitled “Allicin Treatment during Oocyte Maturation Improves the Development of Preimplantation Porcine Embryos by Modulating Apoptotic Gene Expression.”

The paper presented at the meeting reported a study related to the effect of allicin, strong anti-oxidant and -bacterial compound, on the external maturation of pig oocytes. The favorable maturation activity of the substance was confirmed by demonstrating a decline in apoptotic gene expression associated with the external oocyte development.

The results are expected to be valuable in developing a protocol for external cultivation of immature eggs cells from Jeju black cows and pigs.

The research project discussed at the annual meeting has been funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Rural Development Administration, Jeju Woo Jang Choon Project, and Agriculture Research and Food Technology Planning and Evaluation Institute.
